About the name
Tidal wave: This is the wrong term. The event has nothing to do with tides
at all. Tides are caused by the attraction force of the Moon.
Tsunami: This English word is derived from the Japanese word. It does mean the
waves generated by the eruption of undersea earthquake.
The Japanese word "tsunami" 津波 means literally 'harbor wave', and does not
mean waves caused by undersea earthquakes. However, by common practice, it
is the accepted by the general public and is the most commonly used term today.
Hai Xiao 海啸: This is the Chinese term for waves generated by undersea earthquakes.
It does not mean 'tides' nor does it mean 'harbor'. The term is, however, not
used outside of China or in non-Chinese writings
