Forest of Steles (Bailin)

Nearly a millenia ago during the reign of Zhe Zhong of the Northern Song dynasty (AD 1087) a need was recognized to preserve inscriptions that had been made on stone for commemorative purposes.

Xian was designated as the repository for these stelae and artifacts from the period and earlier dynasties were gathered and preserved. This continued through the ensuing 900 years until today the collection contains nearly 3,000 pieces.

Inscriptions of scholars of the Qin and Han dynasties, writings and poems of sages and philosophers through the ages and samples of the calligraphy of the old masters have been preserved.
