Sri Lanka is a small island country adjacent to India.

Near the Southern end of the Island is Hambantota, where a new sea port is to be constructed with the support of China. The entire project cost of one billion US$ will be borne by China.

Oil Route

In recent years, China has become more and more dependent on oil imports from the Middle East. Thus, the security of the sea route taken by the oil tankers are of great importance to China. Sri Lanka, situated in the Indian Ocean and very near to the Marlaca Strait, has a stragetic location for the protection of the oil route.
